15 minute din noul film al lui James Cameron, "Avatar",au fost proiectate în sistem 3D (stereoscopie) în avanpremieră,în sute de săli din toată lumea.
Eveniment cinematografic sau doar marketing ?
James Cameron declara la prezentarea trailerului:
"We're going to blow you to the back wall of the theatre in a way you haven't seen for a long time. My goal is to rekindle those amazing mystical moments my generation felt when we first saw 2001: A Space Odyssey or the next generation's Star Wars. It took me 10 years to find something hard enough to be interesting.""I've wanted to make this movie from the time I wrote the treatment 11 years ago. I was just biding my time for when it was going to be technically possible. I'm so invested in the 3-D, and I love the challenge of creating an alien culture. We're creating a world from scratch, so it's really fun."
Este primul film de ficţiune realizat de Cameron după "Titanic", cel mai mare succes din istoria cinematografului. Cu un scenariu SF,"Avatar" îmbină utilizarea actorilor
reali cu grafica pe calculator, totul în tehnica 3D. Filmul prezintă povestea unui soldat veteran (interpretat de Sam Worthington) parapalegic care explorează şi lucrează prin teleprezenţă pe planeta Pandora,locuită de Na'vi, o specie de extratereştri umanoizi cu limba şi cultură proprie.Soldatul renunţă la înfăţişarea sa umană în favoarea trupului şi culturii Na'vi locale.
Opiniile criticilor au fost reţinute:
"The film is a rare, madly ambitious attempt to not just show, but to immerse cinema-goers in an alien landscape. And judging from what I saw on screen earlier today, Cameron has pulled it off spectacularly.
Instead of looking like a far-flung corner of our own world, the lush, verdant planet of Pandora is like nothing we have seen before. The plant life here is shockingly unearthly, while the inhabitants appear to have followed a completely different evolutionary path to those we are used to; the sentient ones are sleek, ten-foot tall, blue-skinned creatures called the Na'vi."
"I felt completely immersed in the sublime, bizarre beauty of the Pandorian rainforest, both comforted by its warmth, and unnerved by its inherent perversity. And that, certainly, is tribute to the 3D work - the dripping fronds almost seem to lick your face, the humidity makes you feel you should be perspiring.But will it have the narrative warmth and humanity to transcend its geeky space opera roots and reach out to a wider audience?"
Producătorii, care au investit 240 de milioane de dolari, îl prezintă ca pe un film revoluţionar care va schimba viitorul celei de-a şaptea arte, şi speră, bineînţeles, în profituri pe măsura celor aduse de "Titanic".
James Cameron a avut ideea filmului "Avatar" încă de acum 14 ani, însă producţia propriu-zisă a demarat de-abia în 2008, folosindu-se camere de filmat("fusion camera")construite chiar de către celebrul cineast de origine canadiană.
O variantă extinsă a trailer-ului, cu durata de 15 minute a fost prezentată în cinematografe din mai multe oraşe britanice.
Cu trei premii Oscar în palmares, James Cameron s-a remarcat atât ca regizor, cât şi ca scenarist şi producător.
Printre filmele de care şi-a legat numele se numără "The Terminator", "The Abyss",
"Terminator 2", "Aliens" şi "Titanic".
