„In his 1988 book Mind Children, computer scientist and futurist Hans Moravec generalizes Moore's law to make predictions about the future of artificial life. Moravec outlines a timeline and a scenario in this regard, in that the robots will evolve into a new series of artificial species, starting around 2030-2040.

In Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendent Mind, published in 1998, Moravec further considers the implications of evolving robot intelligence, generalizing Moore's law to technologies predating the integrated circuit, and speculating about a coming "mind fire" of rapidly expanding superintelligence, similar to Vinge's ideas.”

Inventivul roman semnat de scriitoarea americană Jennifer Egan, „A Visit from the Goon Squad” (Pe aici au trecut cuțitarii), avînd ca temă centrală trecerea timpului, i-a adus autoarei prestigioasele premii Pulitzer 2011 pentru literatură și National Books Critics Circle 2012.

La începutul acestui an, Jennifer Egan a cîştigat cu acelaşi roman şi premiul National Book Critics Circle („Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad (Knopf), a novel at once experimental in form and crystal clear in the overlapping stories it delivers, offering us a sense of youth and what gets lost along the way, the story of an aging punk rocker turned music producer and a kleptomaniac written in a non-linear series of linked stories that continually layer character and thematic content into a cohesive narrative.”).

Romanul „A Visit from the Goon Squad” a fost finalist și la Premiile Pen Faulkner și LA Times Book.

Jennifer Egan, 48 de ani, a primit critici favorabile pentru operele sale neconvenţionale în care abordează problema crizei identitare moderne. Printre romanele sale se numără şi „The Invisible Circus” (1993), „Look at Me”(2001), „The Keep” (2006).

„Acest roman arată cît de neaşteptate şi de şocante pot fi schimbările din viaţă”, a declarat autoarea. Ea a mai adăugat că a fost inspirată de seria „În căutarea timpului pierdut” de Marcel Proust.

Încă un roman avînd o temă SF cîștigă Premiul Pulitzer.
Romanul „A Visit from the Goon Squad” este în mod asumat un remake de secol XXI al seriei „În căutarea timpului pierdut”. Scurgerea sinuoasă a timpului, crize de identitate, viaţa cu toate schimbările şi surprizele ei sunt temele abordate de Jennifer Egan.

După „The Road” (Drumul) de Cormac McCarthy „The Cloud Atlas” (Atlasul norilor) de David Mitchell și „The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” de Michael Chabon,  „A Visit from the Goon Squad” este un exemplar clar de utilizare a convențiilor SF de către un scriitor de mainstream.

UN FILM SF ÎN DESCHIDEREA FESTIVALULUI DE FILM DIN TORONTO

Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) (care va începe joi 6 septembrie) a programat ca film de începere a festivităților, producția SF „Looper” în regia lui Rian Johnson, cu Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis și Emily Blunt.

TIFF este precedat de Mostra di Venezia, faimosul Festival Internațional de Film de la Veneția (29 august - 8 septembrie).

Piers Handling (Director TIFF) și Cameron Bailey (Artistic Director TIFF) au anunțat că festivalul va cuprinde 17 gale și 45 de prezentări speciale cuprinzînd 38 de premiere mondiale (printre care filme ale regizorilor Marco Bellochio, Neil Jordan, Terrence Malick, Margarethe von Trotta, Thomas Vinterberg, Mike Newell, François Ozone, Jacques Audiard, Mira Nair, Chen Kaige, Takeshi Kitano).

Vor fi vizionate și alte filme SF sau fantastice sau filme avînd inserții SF precum „Atlasul norilor”.

PREMIILE ROSNY AÎNÉ 2012 : NOMINALIZĂRILE

Premiile Rosny Aîné sînt decernate începînd cu 1980 romanelor și povestirilor SF francofone. Premiile sînt decernate de cititori prin două tururi de scrutin.
Toate textele publicate în franceză cu un an înainte sînt eligibile în cadrul primului tur care conduce la o preselecție a cinci titluri per categorie.
Preselecția este supusă votului participanților la Convenția Națională Franceză de Science Fiction (anul acesta se desfășoară la Semoy, o suburbie a Orléansului,  între 23-26 august 2012) și se desemnează cei doi laureați.

Din 2004 Premiile Rosny Aîné constau dintr-o statuetă creată de artistul Caza.
Autorul francez care a primit cele mai multe Premii Rosny Aîné este Roland Wagner (6 premii), apoi Jean-Pierre Hubert și Jean-Claude Dunyach (cîte 4 premii) și Raymond Milési și Joelle Wintrebert (cîte 3 premii).
Antologia „Les Navigateurs de l'impossible” grupează povestirile premiate între 1980-2000.
