Premiul John W.Campbell este decernat în timpul banchetului care încheie Conferinţa anuală Campbell,ce are loc la Universitatea din Kansas,S.U.A, din Lawrence,Kansas între 9-12 iulie 2009.
Conferinţa Campbell este dedicată discuţiilor despre scrisul science-fiction-ului,critică şi teorie literară,activitatea editoriale,predarea SF-ului,arta SF.
Premiul Campbell a fost decernat pentru prima dată în 1973.
